- W opracowaniu autor podejmuje próbę określenia czy ekonomia jest skoncentrowana tylko na rozpoznawaniu doraźnych relacji pomiędzy zdarzeniami gospodarczymi, czy też zajmuje się badaniem tych zjawisk zachodzących w gospodarce. Udowadnia również ich znaczenie i istotę dla funkcjonowania społeczności.
In his paper "Explaining and Understanding in Economics", the author tries to determine whether economics is merely supposed to identify causal relationships between economic events, or whether it is also supposed to prove that economic events are meaningful, regardless of whether their course is natural or directed by man. As distinct from nature, the economy is a human creation and as such - an ingredient of culture. As a consequence, it can be judged on the basis of its significance in everyday life. Identifying the role played by understanding in economics requires rejection of methodological monism and psychologism as a means of comprehending values, a view popular among economic theorists. Since economics cannot avoid evaluating reality and setting economic goals, positive economics must be supplemented by an analysis of the importance of economic events. Otherwise, it will be impossible to fully comprehend the importance of the economy in human life. (original abstract) - Accessibility
