Abstract

The article focuses on the subprime crisis analysis with special attention paid to phases of the crisis and its main sources. Reasons of subprime crisis were compared to ones that caused other contemporary banking crises. As the author concludes, fundamental reasons were the same: lack of prudent assessment of creditworthiness of debtors, loopholes in prudential and accounting regulations and supervisory practices (especially high leverage for investment banks), as well as the failure of the rating agencies to assess the risk of CDOs (collateralized debt obligations) in a proper way. Financial innovations caused the contagion effect that was very strong in the global financial market. (original abstract)
