Abstract

This article deals with current knowledge on the relationship between the characteristics of persons managing small- and medium-sized enterprises (owners and managers) and the way those companies act on international markets. Research on the internationalisation of enterprises shows that many such personal characteristics might influence firms’ performance abroad, and this is confirmed by the most important investigations carried out worldwide. The analysis is based on a fourfold division of such characteristics. This division is based on the orthogonal distinction between objective-subjective and general-specific dimensions. The author points out that it is easier to prove the existence of such a relationship in the case of objective characteristics (especially demographic characteristics) than subjective ones (which are largely of a psychological nature). The author explains the terminology used in this current of research (e.g., psychological distance and international orientation). (original abstract)
