Abstract

Smart development is understood as the growing role knowledge and innovation in economy which requires higher quality of education, improved conditions of research activities, support for innovation and knowledge transfer, better implementation of information and communication technologies, as well as ensuring that innovative ideas are translated into new products and services in order to stimulate growth, create new jobs and solve social problems both in Europe and worldwide. The study offers an attempt of smart growth identification in the form of smart specialization, creativity and innovation pillars, by means of their descriptive characteristics. The assessment of Polish NUTS 2 regions' position in the European regional space, for each of the distinguished pillars and in the context of Europe 20 strategy goals, was performed based on the suggested characteristics.(original abstract)
