Abstract

Nicolaus Copernicus, the great astronomer and mathematician, a doctor and a lawyer, an economist and a philologist, a geographer and a cartographer, a technician engaged mainly in surveying and a researcher on fortifications, and finally an outstanding administrator. The researcher on the essence and function of money formulated the law of monetary circulation in bimetallism (the system recognizing the simultaneous circulation of gold and silver coins). In the years 1517-1526 Copernicus wrote treatises on the project of a monetary reform in Poland. The reform was carried out in 1526. In 1528 his main treatise appeared entitled "DE OPTIMA MONETAE CUDENDAE RATIONE" ("On the Best Method of Coining"). (original abstract)
