Abstract
The transportation sector in Poland was faced with two challenges in 1990. The first one was a result of the general economic recession which caused a fall in the volume of transports. The other one was related to the consequences of the launched economic reform, which principally altered the mechanisms of functioning of the economy. The latter challenge made it necessary for the sector to adapt itself to the new economic conditions. The article describes the situation of transportation in the nineties with a particular stress on restructuration, privatization and deregulation as elements of the new transportation policy, as well as on specific features of those processes in particular branches. In conclusion attention is drawn to the adjustments that condition the integration of the national system of transportation with that of the European Union.
