- Abstract
- Macroeconomic data show that the effect of the economic reform that has been implemented since 1989, was a deep recession associated with the fall in real gross domestic product of 23 per cent, or nearly one fourth of its level. A hypothesis that the standard statistical data on the economies subjected to deep systemic transformations may distort the true picture of the economy (L. Balcerowicz), is discussed in the article. Using a technique of structural analysis the author examines macroeconomic effects of the transformation that consist in a marketization of its sectors subsidized by the state. The analysis confirms the view that as a results of the structural change realized in that process, the macroeconomic data provide a distorted or even a false picture of the economy. The structural analysis leads, however, to further reaching conclusions on interpretation of macroeconomic data and formulation of proposals for the economic policy based on those conclusions.
