Abstract
In this article (a part of broader treatise) the author considers theoretical and particularly, practical shortcomings of the concept of market socialism. In part one he reminds of the Oskar Lange's departure from his early theory of the market socialism toward the centralized system with computers. In the article The Computer and the Market O. Lange described the market as an accounting instrument of the preelectronic epoch. In the second (principal) part, the author examines the misfortunes of economic reforms in countries of real socialism, including Poland, Hungary, Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union at times of perestroika. Their experience implies, in the author's opinion, the lack of any alternative for the capitalist economy. In the final part, the author considers the Western debate on the market socialism. He finds a certain paradox in the fact that exactly at time when those concepts suffered a defeat in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, a revival of interest in the theoretical problems of the market socialism is observed in Western Europe.
