- The paper analyses the scope and nature of poverty after the fifth round of the enlargement of the European Union The author starts with outlining a theoretical and methodological framework for studying poverty and highlighting concepts of measuring poverty, with a focus on the UE approach. Subsequently, reflections on the prospective EU social policy of combating poverty are presented. Finally, the comparative analysis of the scope of relative and absolute poverty in the 'old' and 'new' EU member states before and after enlargement is provided against a background of the overall EU picture. The presented data show that the most recent EU enlargement has created a new situation not only in a political and economic sense, but also in terms of social policy. (original abstract)
