Abstract

The authors worked out a projection for the strongly-urbanized, dominated by the population of Warsaw, Warsaw Voivodeship on the base of forecasts made by the Central Statistical Office. They forecast stabilization of population number in the Voivodeship till year 2000, being the result of a negative natural increase and limited possibilities of population inflow. Due to the low natural increase and minor positive balance of migration - these factors will also determine the fact, that the population aging process in the region, especially in Warsaw will proceed swiftly. Therefore, the investment plans should be treated in a way, which would enable their meeting the needs of the aging society and facilitating lives of people. Stabilization of population number in Capital Voivodeship creates new opportunity to improve the functioning of Warsaw region, and at the same time may improve the living conditions of its inhabitants, through arresting the quantitative growth and transition of qualitative development. Also the foreseen decreases in numbers of children of day-nursery and kindergarten ages and - by the end of the 20th century - also the children attending primary schools create hopes for the improvements of care on young children and education. Subsequently, the decrease in the number of persons at the age of economic activity will enforce the improvement of effectiveness in management of the existing labour resources and application of more modern techniques and technologies in all branches of production. The authors assume, that the development of Warsaw should be directed towards the fulfilment of the functions of capital, hence - the selection of firms and institutions, exclusion of the ones which worsen, instead of improving functioning of the region seems necessary.
