Abstract
(fragment tekstu)

The Norwegian social insurance scheme consists of three parts: the National Insurance Scheme, the Family Allowance Scheme and the Scheme for Cash Benefit for Families with Small Children. An extensive structure of the system, huge variety of benefits offered, as well as quite complicated procedure with strict conditions under which the rights and benefits are granted can cause many problems to the insured parties. However, on the other hand, the organization of the system enables to provide financial support to all entities which need such assistance. It is not without reason that Norway is considered to be the welfare state - the total expenditure of the public insurance system in 2009 amounted to more than NOK 289 billion, or 12.4% of GDP of the country. The article presents the principles of participation in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme, conditions of contributions payments and the rules for granting benefits. Additionally, some reforms implemented since 2006 are described. The article was based on materials obtained in the branches of the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Service NAV in Stavanger and Sandnes and statistical data published by Statistics Norway SSB.
