Abstract

The paper presents modern economic debate, mostly theoretical, on expectations formation. This subject is still discussed in the literature: no ultimate conclusion has been made up to now. New models of expectations formation are proposed and tested. 20th century discussion on adaptive and rational expectations did not bring sufficient way of describing the way how non professionals are forecasting macroeconomic performances. New theoretical solutions including sticky information, rational inattention, epidemiological theory and adaptive learning, as well as their empirical verification, are appearing continuously. The expectations formation pattern conditions the possibility of the central bank's goal achievement and the macroeconomic costs of monetary policy actions. This is why the paper delivers some conclusions for the central bankers. The paper is based mainly on the literature review and qualitative analysis. Its subject limits the possibility of giving unambiguous conclusions(original abstract)
