Abstract
Tourism is a social, cultural and economic phenomenon which entails the movement of people to countries or places outside their usual environment for personal or business/professional purposes. Many countries are adopting successfully a migration from the traditional "sun and sand" or "history tour" tourism towards a higher quality market which MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and events; or conventions and exhibitions) represents. MICE, in a context of travel, is an acronym that refers to a specialized niche of group tourism that is dedicated to planning, booking, and facilitating conferences, seminars, meetings and many other different types of events. The purpose of the paper is to describe the potential future integration between ICT and tourism for the case of MICE industry. First to develop the theoretical framework and reference concepts to understand the phenomena. Later measuring the economic impact and the scale of MICE industry. Finally, meetings and events are currently using some of the most advanced audio-visual technological tools available. Smartphones, social networks, and tablets are increasingly used to improve the participant experience and as an easier method to gather feedback and plan events, towards Tourism 2.0. An increasing number of countries are promoting themselves and their venues as MICE destinations. (original abstract)
