Abstract
Choć uniwersytety to instytucje zmiany społecznej odpowiadające w dużej mierze za trwanie społeczeństwa i kultury, to są one osadzone w lokalnym kontekście politycznym, ekonomicznym i społecznym oraz nierozerwalnie sprzęgnięte z globalnymi zmianami. Autorka śledzi proces demokratyzacji dostępu do uniwersytetów i otwarcia tych elitarnych instytucji na osoby z klas pracujących na przykładzie Anglii końca XIX wieku i ZSRR w okresie międzywojennym. Proponuje trudne porównanie tych różnych przypadków jako przykładów budowy instytucji szkolnictwa wyższego otwartych dla szerszych grup społecznych i nastawionych na kształcenie praktyczne. Tak uniwersytety z czerwonej cegły, jak i uniwersytety porewolucyjnej Rosji miały stać się egalitarnymi uczelniami odpowiadającymi wyzwaniom nowoczesności. (abstrakt oryginalny)

Although universities are institutions of social change that are largely responsible for the persistence of society and culture, they are embedded in the local political, economic, and social context, and inextricably linked to global change. The article tracks the process of democratising access to universities and opening these elite institutions to people from the working class. It uses examples of England of the late nineteenth century and the interwar USSR. It proposes a difficult comparison of these different contexts as cases of the construction of higher education institutions open to wider social groups and geared towards practical education. Both redbrick universities and post-revolutionary Soviet universities were to become egalitarian universities corresponding to the challenges of modernity. (original abstract)
