Abstract

The article examines the factors which caused the economic break-up of the Brazilian economy at the beginning of 1999. The author describes the circumstances which led to a departure from the country's policy of anchoring the exchange rate to that of the US dollar. This in turn caused Brazil to fail in obtaining its previous high rates of growth. The author then mentions the important characteristics of the macroeconomic indicators in Brazil from 1995 to 1998 and the structure of its foreign trade based upon regional economic groups. The unfavourable tendencies of increasing foreign indebtedness, the negative structure of the current account balance, and the high budget deficit are highlighted. Afterward, a description follows of government's stabilisation plan including the IMF support. The government plans to implement a rigorous set of financial laws and regulations designed to decrease the deficit in the coming three years, as well as support the relative growth of the GDP. Further, the article also describes the dangers of the Brazilian crisis with regard to the economies of Latin America and the world as a whole. Ranked approximately tenth in the world, the effects of the crisis on savings plans and monetary policy caused somewhat obvious interest throughout economic circles around the world, especially due to the rise of globalisation.(original abstract)
