Abstract

The process of consolidation in the banking system has been presented in this article. Consolidation has been the big theme in the global financial market during the 1990's. The main reasons for mergers are: - scale (costs, capital), - product and geographical scope, - management's ambitions, - competition (domestic and international), - synergy. The surge in mergers and acquisitions in early 1999 seems to show that efficiency, focus and shareholder value are European manager's new goals. Mergers and alliances are the chosen way to grow more robust. The most important is that you can get big being better and not better by being big.(original abstract)
