Abstract

In this article, the author addresses the economics of health care. The article reviews many aspects; on one hand, its objective is to identify the determinants of an increase in expenditures on health care and, on the other, it attempts to evaluate the impact of health on economic growth and standards of living. Consequently, the article comprises two parts: microeconomic and macroeconomic. The first part, on the microeconomic aspects of health care, is devoted to an analysis of the determinants of supply and demand on the medical services market. In the macroeconomic part, the author looks at issues connected with the impact of health on economic growth and the share of health care in creating and redistributing national income. The research findings indicate that the main determinants of an increase in health care expenditures are economic factors (available financial resources of payers and household disposable income) as well as administrative and legal regulations. From the macroeconomic perspective, an increase in health care expenditures should, in particular, be sought in the combined impact of technological progress and the transfer of financial resources to patients to enable them to purchase expensive services.
