- W artykule poruszono kwestię poznawczej wartości sztuki dla myśli socjologicznej. W analizie założono, że sztuka ma dużą wartość poznawczą dla socjologów, jeśli jest przez nich traktowana jako szczególna reprezentacja procesów i zjawisk socjologicznych.
This article discusses the issue of the cognitive value of art for sociological thought. The analysis posits that art has great cognitive value for a sociologist if the or she treats it as a particular representation of social phenomena and processes, and the discipline of the sociology of art is approached as a social science rather than as an art. Art can be a source of knowlege about society if its subjects are seen from the perspective of connotation, in which the primary focus is on the relation between the creator and the work of art, or denotation, which is concerned with the relation between the subjects of art and their perceivers. In the former, the creator can fill the role of either expert or respodent. In the latter, the perceiver is seen strictly as a respondent. It is necessary to stress that both possibilities can provide different but worthwhile forms of social knowlege as each has its own limitations and truth criteria.
