- The author refers to the valuable work of H. Priebe who states that the increase of the land area has become a magic call irrespective of the economic system. Priebe calls this into question. The fact that the productive potential of a farm was determined by its area for ages has led to accepting its size as the subject of economic and political doctrines whereas essentially it is the problem of scientific, technical and economic organization and of management. On this assumption he discusses 1) the quality of the land as a factor of production and 2) possibilities of substituting labour by capital goods in agriculture because these factors determine to a great extent the role of the area of land in the structure of the farm. Agreeing with Priebe, the author says that one cannot treat the area of the land as a single factor influencing the productivity and profitableness. In real conditions the basis of the economic efficiency of a farm is to a great degree its agrarian structure being the result of historical development. In connection with changes of this structure the problem of one or two professions has become the subject of regular discussions, in particular it concerns the farms on which work is for the farmers their casual occupation. Depending on whether it is one or two occupations the problem of the expansion of the area of land is not of equal importance. Neither is it the same for particular branches of production. The predominance of one production branch may make the cause of the area of land problematic. Therefore the problem should not be approached in a routine way. (original abstract)
