Abstrakt
Przywykliśmy już do szeroko stosowanych, upowszechnionych w latach 70 XX wieku, kodów kreskowych, dzięki którym możliwe jest zautomatyzowane wprowadzanie danych do systemu komputerowego oraz dalej - identyfikacja zasobów, z którą zarówno przedsiębiorcy, jak i konsumenci mają do czynienia niemal na co dzień. Postęp techniczny sprawia, że dostepne stają się technologie doskonalsze i o większych możliwościach aplikacyjnych. Coraz częściej wprowadza się identyfikację automatyczną wykorzystującą fale rediowe RFID. Zastępuje ona identyfikację z wykorzystaniem kodów kreskowych i stąd często nazywana jest "radiowym kodem kreskowym". (fragment tekstu)

Radio frequency identification, or RFID, is a generic term for technologies that use radio waves to automatically identify objects. This eliminates line-of-sight constraints and makes it possible to track items without costly, and sometimes cumbersome, manual bar code scanning. According to researchers at the Lemelsen Center at MIT, RFID is the tenth most innovative technology of the past 25 years. It is an emerging technology that still has a high cost, but may be what many businesses are looking for. RFID and bar codes are different technologies and have different applications, which sometimes overlap. RFID is one of several technology tools that can improve firms' agility, leanness, and responsiveness - the three competitiveness factors for the new age, according to A.T. Kearney. This paper takes stock of where RFID technology stands today, discusses its strategic impact on supply chains, and examines key factors that will influence its broad implementation.
