- In the article, the development the system of functioning of the socialist economy in Poland from 1945 till 1989 is analysed, from the point of view of "developmental alternatives" that were present at its particular stages, and the related options that were made by political authorities. It has been assumed that the principal factor shaping the history is man (human groups, social classes, authorities), whose activities are conditioned by various circumstances. In the post-war period, the shape of the system in Poland had been uniformly predetermined because it was subdued to the interest sphere of the Soviet Union. The reforms of the system that had been undertaken at times of W. Gomułka, are discussed and the mechanism of their atrophy is presented. It is argued that the most favourable conditions for the reform of the socialist system toward the market and democracy were present at the beginning of the seventies, but they were spoiled by the crew of E. Gierek. The role of W. Jaruzelski in the process of reforming the country in the eighties, and his contribution to Round Table, which opened the way to the systemic transformation in Poland, is emphasised.
