New media offers a wide range of possibilities for language teachers and the term CALL (computer-assisted language learning) has been coined to refer to the use of new media in this field. The aim of this article is to describe the key areas new media offer in this respect: language practice for ELT (English language teaching), the use of the internet as a source of information and as a means of communication. Also intercultural aspects will be addressed. In its early stages, the World Wide Web was mainly a source of information. Soon, however, it became a participatory medium allowing everyone with a computer to share information with other people worldwide, voice one's opinion and promote oneself in social networks and blogs, display and share creative work, for example on YouTube or ask for advice in forums. The Web has be-come the socalled Web 2.0. It is not about profound technological innovations, but refers to a new usage of already existing tools. Today its applications to access and share information and to communicate are widely used both privately and professionally and most people cannot imagine life without Internet. (fragment of text)
