The paper aims at describing the outline, execution and results of a cooperative research project dealing with information access in a university context with respect to transferability of the findings to organizational information access challenges at small and medium enterprises. To specify the concept of information, it was differentiated from the related concepts data and knowledge. Following the reasoning, that information access via automated tools may not be feasible in heterogeneous IT infrastructures at organizations or small and medium enterprises, a multi-step approach for mining precious organizational information from legacy systems is presented. It has been shown that the approach works even for Content Management Systems with sparsely structured data storage. Beside this practical benefit the paper describes the outline, initiating and execution of a research-based teaching project in the context of the master's program for Business Information Systems at Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences, which dealt with this problem area.
