- The use of e-learning platforms in institutions of higher education is becoming increasingly common. Such platforms offer ample opportunities of transmitting teaching materials and monitoring students' progress, often larger and more useful than traditional tools and even other electronic channels of communication (e.g. e-mail). The question is how students perceive and evaluate such platforms, both in general and with reference to their specific functionalities. Are they familiar with the possibilities the platforms offer? What is students' attitude towards e-learning platforms and what can be done to make them more popular on the one hand and more user-friendly on the other? To answer these questions we decided to use an example of the Moodle platform which is used for a couple of years in the University of Economics in Katowice (UEK). The purpose of the paper is thus threefold: 1) firstly, to determine the degree and extent of Moodle use by teachers and students of the UEK, 2) secondly, to assess the usefuhiess and functionality of Moodle based on the students' opinions, 3) and thirdly, to identify some factors influencing students' assessment of Moodle.
