- The earned value analysis method was used in a practical application to control and forecast progress in five similar engineering design assignments. Earned value analysis is a method that helps to monitor and forecast progress in engineering design projects. It provides a comprehensive set of metrics which help to assess performance and output of an engineering project. Three key figures form the basis of Earned Value Management. They are Budgeted Cost of Work Scheduled (BCWS) or Planned Value (PV), Budgeted Cost of Work Performed (BCWP) or Earned Value (EV) and Actual Cost of Work Performed (ACWP) or Actual Cost (AC). The earned value analysis can be deployed in practice without considerable effort. It provides valuable insights into the current status of a project and facilitates forecasting future progress and performance of a project. It is a tool that enables managers to identify and control problems before they become insurmountable. It allows engineering projects to be managed better, both on time and on budget.(original abstract)
