Expenditures on healthcare are constantly increasing in the vast majority of countries. Attention should be paid not only to seeking new sources of funding but also to effective usage of currently available resources. Therefore, the article aims to verify whether in the Polish healthcare system, a patient consciously manages his/her own health and if one participates in the decision-making process concerned with methods of treatment. Moreover, it is analysed whether the structure of the system itself, including financing methods, allows for disease diagnosis at early stage. These three issues constitute potential determinants of effectiveness of spending the public and private funds on healthcare, which in some way lie beyond the core focus of the healthcare system. The article presents selected areas of public funds expenditure and proposes means of their analysis and measurement.(original abstract) - Dostępne w
