Spatial development of suburban areas in the Roman Empire is a dynamically developing field of research. The results of field works conducted so far and the analysis of ancient written sources reveal a completely different picture of suburbs from today's. Suburban areas were used for purposes closely related to the functioning of the city - workshops, quarries, warehouses of building materials, waste yards as well as vast cemeteries were usually located there. The areas around the city were also occupied by farms supplying crops and food products to local commercial markets, and by suburban villas for recreational purposes. The article discusses the ways of development and functions of suburban areas in Roman cities on the basis of selected examples from the area of Italy and the provinces of the Empire.(original abstract) - Dostępne w
